Background Supreme Court Justices are nominated by the President and must be confirmed by the Senate with a simple majority vote. Appointments are lifetime positions, and new appointments only occur when there is a vacancy due to retirement, death, or resignation of a sitting Justice. Currently, there are no vacancies on the Supreme Court.

Resolution Criteria This market will resolve YES for any answer if that person is successfully confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice at any point in their life. Multiple answers may be added by anyone. The market will resolve NO when they die without such appointment.

Considerations

  • Supreme Court nominations are highly dependent on political factors, including which party controls the presidency and Senate

  • Historical precedent shows that most nominees have significant judicial experience, though this is not a requirement

  • The timing of future vacancies is unpredictable, as Justices serve life terms and individually decide when/if to retire
